Reward Types

Contributors can earn HONEY from the Hivemapper Network in a number of ways. Each reward transaction has a type, which can be found on the Hivemapper Explorer and in the Hivemapper app.

  • Map Coverage Collecting high-quality imagery with a dashcam

  • Map Coverage (Fleet) - Collecting high-quality imagery with a dashcam through a Fleet

  • Map Editing and QA – Helping to train the Map AI by annotating map data

  • Map Consumption – A special reward when a customer buys map data you helped generate

  • Buzz Mapping with a phone by submitting reports on issues such as roadwork

  • HONEY Burst Mapping specific areas where customers have requested coverage

  • Bounty This refers to special Hivemapper Foundation incentives such as the bounties created by MIP-2 (for dashcam contributors) and MIP-3 (for AI Trainers)

  • Foundation Reward Used for any one-off transfer from the Hivemapper Foundation, such as an airdrop reward for buying and activating a dashcam

Some of these rewards are minted from the weekly rewards pool, while others are transfers from the Hivemapper Foundation. The table below explains the type, source and rewards pool allocation of each reward type, if applicable.

Rewards Pool

The rewards pool is calculated weekly based on Global Map Progress. Contributors currently receive 90.5% of HONEY from the minted rewards pool.

The largest amount of HONEY minted, 80.5%, is currently allocated to Map Coverage, and divided among regions based on their Region Progress score. The amount of HONEY tokens an individual contributor might expect to receive during a given week depends on individual factors such as the freshness of their routes and the quality of their submissions.

Another 10% is allocated toward Map Editing and QA. As the map matures over time, token rewards are expected to shift toward additional categories of map editing tasks.

The remaining 9.5% of HONEY minted each week is an “operational reward” for ensuring the ongoing operation of the Hivemapper Network. This reward compensates Hivemapper Inc. for the costs incurred to process and store millions of images, among other things. Please reach out to the Hivemapper Foundation if your organization is interested in helping to operate the network.

Under Map Improvement Proposal 13, a portion of the Operational Reward will be redirected to dashcam contributors over time as increasingly decentralized edge computing reduces cloud computing costs.

Consumption Rewards

The amount of tokens earned by contributors is not capped at 4 billion HONEY. In order to consume data from the network (for example, through the Map Image API), HONEY tokens must be burned in exchange for Map Credits. A share of the tokens burned are re-minted and distributed to contributors as Map Consumption rewards. Consumption Rewards are given directly to the contributor(s) who helped generate the data and do not take global map progress into account.

Under the changes made in Map Improvement Proposal 15, the proportion HONEY burned that will be reminted to contributors is 25%, up to a maximum of 500,000 HONEY per week.

This means that although 4 billion HONEY tokens have been allocated to contributors for weekly minted rewards, the amount of HONEY available to contributors is not limited to 4 billion. Although there is a weekly cap of 500,000 HONEY per week in Consumption Rewards, Consumption Rewards will be available for contributors in perpetuity.

Bursts

Bursts also allow map data customers to put HONEY up for grabs as a bounty on an area of interest. There is no limit on the amount of HONEY that may be transferred to contributors through Bursts.
