Incentivizes the creation of a decentralized, global map

What is Honey?

Honey incentivizes the creation of a decentralized, global map by providing rewards for successfully mapped tiles. It underlies the Hivemapper Network:

Honey has multiple capabilities that are discussed in this document.

Tile Availability

Determines a tile status and availability for mapping rewards

Tile Attribution

Determines whether a tile was successfully mapped

Tile Rewards

Determines how many rewards are given for a successfully mapped tile

Tile Priority

Additional rewards are given for priority tiles - these are set by users

Reward Availability

During the initial phases, rewards are only availability in certain markets

Tile System

Honey breaks the world up into small tiles, where each tile can be mapped by a contributor. A tile is the atomic unit the network uses to capture the truth about the physical world at that location. When a tile is successfully mapped a reward is given to a contributor for providing map coverage. This economic incentive for each tile builds reliability and consistency for organizations consuming the network's map data.

Each tile is a hexagon-shaped tile. There are two kinds of tiles - ground tiles and airborne tiles.

Tile type

Tile size

Contributing with...

Ground tile

0.0000063 sq km or 8.8 ft wide

dashcam or smartphone

Airborne tile

0.1053325 sq km

Tile Sizes

Airborne and ground tiles are different sizes, as they serve different needs for the global map.

Ground tiles

  • About as wide as a very narrow road lane

  • Small sized tiles encourages contributors to collect in all those micro nooks behind buildings, etc.

  • Small sized tiles reduces the chances that one will not fully capture the complete tile.

Airborne tiles

  • By making airborne tiles reasonably small it enables contributors to start with only 1 or 2 tiles to gain some confidence in the collection workflow

  • Reasonable size to combine with adjacent airborne tiles

Tile Availability

The status of each tile will determine whether or not a tile is currently available to be mapped for rewards.

Rewards Available

Any contributor can map it for rewards

A temporary status, that usually only lasts a few hours at most:

  • Content for this tile has been received and the map is being processed.

  • If the content for the tile successfully maps it, then it becomes Mapped; otherwise returns the tile to an Open status.

Once a tile has been mapped, it re-opens :

  • 📆 7 days later for ground tiles

  • 🗓 30 days later for airborne tile

Tile Attribution

Tile Attribution is responsible for determining whether the contributed content meets the criteria established by the network to successfully map a tile. When the Tile Attribution layer determines that the contributed content successfully provided map coverage for a given tile it will issue rewards for the tile. Why does Tile Attribution exist? Clearly without Tile Attribution the quality of the map would suffer, and users who consume the map would quickly lose trust.

Tile Attribution has a unique and important role, and therefore must be entirely open and transparent to gain the trust of the community:

✅ Location Verification – Ensures that the content was collected at the location it says it was collected at. For example, if a contributor collected dashcam video in Los Angeles, but the location telemetry is claiming that the video was collected in San Diego. Initially the network will use a set of 3rd party members (not Hivemapper Inc. employees) to perform quality control to ensure location verification. It will be transitioned to code using a new and unique proof of location method.

Content Verification – Ensures that the contributed content is

  • Authentic - it's not fake or falsified content

  • Original - it is yours and not a duplicate

  • Meets criteria of the network - each type of content has certain criteria

For example, if a contributor uploads 1080p resolution dashcam video or collected in the evening that would be a simple example of content that does not meet the criteria of the Hivemapper Network.

Tile Verification – Ensures that the tile is in fact available to be mapped for rewards as it sits within an active city and is available to be mapped.

Tile attribution criteria

Whether you are contributing with a smartphone, dashcam, or drone it's critical to understand the Tile Attribution for each mode of contributing as this will impact the rewards.

  • Tile Attribution criteria for contributing smartphone

  • Tile Attribution criteria for contributing with dashcam

  • Tile Attribution criteria for contributing with drone

Tile Rewards

Rewards for providing map coverage are different depending on whether you contribute with a dashcam, drone, or smartphone.

Priority Tiles

Priority tiles are tiles that include additional rewards. Priority tiles are set by users, when they want the tiles mapped faster than they otherwise may be. It is a bit like paying FedEx extra for faster delivery times. Users only pay the additional fee if the tile is mapped within 90 days.

Reward Availability by City

Currently, rewards for mapping are currently only available in the following cities. If there is no green check mark, rewards are not available for that mode of collection. For example, rewards for mapping via dashcam or drone is not available in Austin (TX) at the moment.
